Belinda Hopkins

Director of Transforming Conflict, the National Centre for Restorative Approaches in Youth and Community Settings.

Belinda has been pioneering restorative approaches in youth settings across the UK and beyond, for over 20 years. In the mid 90’s she founded Transforming Conflict and this organisation was the first to offer training and consultancy to schools who wanted to develop a restorative approach. It now also works in the fields of social and community care.

Transforming Conflict has now established itself as one of the foremost providers of training and consultancy in the field of restorative approaches nationally and internationally. The organisation has been recognised as a provider of high quality training by the UK’s Restorative Justice Council (RJC) 

Belinda gained her doctorate in 2006 with research into the implementation of a whole school restorative approach. Her doctoral thesis was the first in the world to explore this topic. She is passionate about sharing how the ethos, principles and practices of Restorative Approaches can transform communities and institutions.

She still runs training courses herself, writes books and articles, develops training materials and resources, and speaks at conferences nationally and internationally. Since 2019 she has been doing an increasing amount of work in Europe, developing partnerships and links in Belgium, Spain, Ukraine and Germany. She moderates the Facebook page called European Circle for Restorative Educators and is keen to see this as a place for people to network and support each other.

Belinda is accredited by the UK Restorative Justice Council as an Accredited Practitioner . She is also on the European Forum for Restorative Justice Training Committee.

Belinda’s books include:

  • Just Schools (JKP 2004), the first book to be published on the subject of the whole school approach.
  • Just Care (JKP 2009) still the only book that offers practical ideas for working restoratively in children’s residential care.
  • The Restorative Classroom (Optimus 2014) – a very practical book with a CD rom full of resources for teachers to transform the way they work in their classroom.
  • Theory into Practice (2017)  Belinda’s first foray into editing – a wonderful collection of essays by practitioners who each explain their restorative practice using a particular theoretical framework.
